spring babies
This morning my little black Cochin hen, Inky, presented me with these downy surprise cuties. Thirty-five days ago she decided she wanted to hatch some eggs... so I gave her a few of the duckies' eggs to set just so she had something to sit on. I never really expected them to hatch! But here they are at less than twenty-four hours old! They will probably weigh at least 12 pounds when they grow up. Their hatching momma, Inky, weighs about twenty-two ounces!
I wish I could get a better photo! I haven't been able to get my camera to cooperate for weeks now and I can't figure out why.

They are adorable.

Congratulations Lulu, you are the best 'god-mother' around... Lucky Inky that she had you to take care of her urges... I see 'duckling' paintings in the future...

Oh my...what a lovely way to start the day...thank you for sharing these babies with us! Will your pond be big enough for them Lulu or will they find a home elsewhere on your land?
Maybe it's time for a new camera battery? Course I think they the camera is supposed to tell you when it's time...

Oh such a sure sign of spring! As my daughter would say "Mama, the chicken had 'ducklins', I thought they were supposed to have 'chicklens'...
Some verbal mistakes we don't have the heart to correct! Now excuse me while I help my daughter put on her 'tylons' and then read her a story about 'crockadielins'...
:o)
